Paul Chatenoud: There is something magic, spiritual, which is indefinable, but that I feel myself And it is one of the reasons I feel at home here - Donegal in Gaelic means "the fort of the foreigners" - and it is what I tell them: as a foreigner, I feel at home. Marie Hélène Fraissé: And he feels so much at home, Paul Chatenoud, that he decided to stay in Donegal 15 years ago. And thus the charm of Ireland operated on him as it did at the time of other writers - we remember Bernard Clavel, Michel Deon, Hervé Jaouen - who wrote beautiful stories about Donegal. So, Donegal, when we discover it, seems to be the quintessence of Ireland. (- ) You can stay at Paul Chatenoud's, and I can tell you that it is truly the highlight of a visit to Ireland - he has a small Bed & Breakfast, because to survive when one loves Ireland, one must be able to make a living. So , the B & B is in Ardara, and it is called "The Green Gate"; you can contact Paul Chatenoud on +353-74-95-41546. It's 8.30pm on France Culture. |

Arriving here due to a "coup de coeur", Paul Chatenoud is a Parisian who became so enamoured of Ireland that he sacrificed everything to settle down in Donegal, where people still know how to welcome a foreigner as a friend. In his cottage, on the heights above Ardara, he welcomes his guests in the local way, around a table, near an extensive private library and a turf fire. It could be difficult to leave this warm place. "The Green Gate " is a traditional Irish cottage with several outbuildings. The panorama stretches as far as Loughros Bay. The breakfast is very rich, with wonderful home-made jams. Paul Chatenoud welcomes you and will tell you the story of this area, untouched by the ravages of time. |

| If you seek an ascetic aesthetic, the steep
climb up to the Green Gate may give your soul some space to breathe and
your consciousness
a chance to recover from the stresses of city life.
The combination of tactile nature (you are hunkered up beside the hill,
with panoramic views opening up away to the sea)
and the ruddy elementalism of the cottage is just right - if you have
an eye for a precise aesthetic, then it's here.
In summer, breakfast is taken at the stone table in the garden, with
Christopher the tame robin dancing attendance on the seat beside you,
and
a high morning moon gazing down from a cerulean sky. Bliss.
